I’m really angry.
A lot of Los Angeles citizens are angry.
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass did not do their jobs. They failed in a way that was unimaginably damaging to the citizens of Los Angeles.
The primary job of a state or city leader is to make sure the basics are covered. This means well-funded police and fire departments, the enforcement of laws, and the mitigation of the biggest natural threats to the area, which in our case is fire, earthquakes, heavy rains, and consequent mudslides. None of this was done, all in favor of more lightweight issues. As a result, major portions of Los Angeles have burned to the ground.
Aside from the preparedness necessary, once disaster does strike, it is necessary that someone to stand it the gap and be responsible, admit mistakes, and enact immediate change. We did not get that from Newsom or Bass. Newsom has repeatedly sought to lay the blame off onto someone, anyone else. Bass has been bizarrely repeating the same “I visited the Hurst Fire Command Post” speech every time there’s a press conference.
